Foreign currencies

Record invoices, expenses and journal entries in EUR, USD or any other currency — Blond converts them to CHF for your accounting.

Activating a foreign currency

Currency fields in Blond only offer CHF and the currencies you've activated. If a currency is missing from the list, it hasn't been activated yet.

Open Company → Settings → Foreign currencies or go straight to https://app.blond.swiss/organization/settings/currency and click Add currency.

Currency: Search by name or code, e.g. "Dinar" or RSD. More than 70 currencies are available.

Exchange rate: Choose whether Blond fetches the rate automatically or you set it yourself.

Exchange rateWhere the rate comes fromBest for
AutomaticMonthly average rate from the ESTV (Swiss Federal Tax Administration), updated every monthMost cases — the ESTV rate is accepted for your VAT return
ManualA fixed rate you enter (1 unit of foreign currency = x CHF)Contractually agreed rates or currencies without an ESTV rate

Valid from: The date from which the currency applies at this rate. Blond suggests the start of your current fiscal year.

Pick a Valid from date early enough

AutoScan only applies a receipt's currency if the currency is already valid on the receipt date. If you're recording older receipts, set Valid from to a date before the oldest one.

If a manual rate changes, add the currency again with the new rate and a new Valid from date. Invoices and expenses you've already recorded keep their rate.

Note

Foreign currencies are included in the Ultimate plan. If your plan doesn't include them, Blond shows you how to unlock the feature when you add a currency. See Manage your Blond subscription.

Watch out for receipts in a foreign currency

If a receipt's currency isn't activated, AutoScan falls back to CHF — the foreign amount would then be booked as Swiss francs. In that case, activate the currency and switch it on the expense. Blond then converts the amount again.

QR-bill: The QR payment slip only supports CHF and EUR. Invoices in other currencies don't get a QR payment slip. See Setting up the QR-bill.

How Blond converts

Your accounting is always kept in CHF. Blond stores the original amount and the exchange rate on every invoice and expense.

WhenWhich rate
Recording an invoice or expenseRate on the invoice or receipt date
Manual journal entryRate on the booking date, unless you enter your own
PaymentRate on the payment date — or the rate you enter when marking as paid

If the rate at payment differs from the original rate, you get an exchange gain or exchange loss. Blond books it automatically to the financial income or financial expenses account from your accounting settings. On the expense detail page, you'll find it under Exchange gain/loss.

Use your bank's actual rate

If you know the CHF amount your bank credited or debited, enter the resulting rate when marking as paid. During bank reconciliation, Blond uses the bank amount; you clear any remaining difference with Book exchange difference.
